(kirsten) I added a backwards clock, to make it seem like the gears were inside making it work.
(beth) I wanted to try adding in a page with some drawing, but gears were all I could think of. Could be interesting.

(kirsten) I added some vines, but since there was a little tearing on the flower, I'm leaving the rest to see what Beth wants to do with it.
(beth) I glued in a piece cut from one of the watercolor crayon monoprints I've been experimenting with.

(kirsten) Just added a little definition to the people and background.
(beth) I added students sketching and then realized the perspective made that dog HUGE, which reminded me of another large dog - hence the red.
(kirsten) A contour line drawing of our school dog, "Taxi". Although she looks unconcious in my drawing, she was just lying down while my 1st grade students drew her.

(beth) Ooooo, this page is going to be sooo much fun.
(kirsten) My friend and I used this tree as part of our design for a chalk painting a couple weekends ago, and I just really enjoyed the shape. It comes from a Gustav Klimt painting.

(beth) Didn't really have time to play with this page much, but I did start a background for the nifty robot.

(beth) Fantastic idea! I filled in a couple of letters.

(kirsten) I was working on an alphabet book idea for a class when I made this page. Maybe there will be little images to represent each letter?

(beth) I wanted to add some two-sided stitching somewhere, as an evolution of the idea of piercing the page with holse, so I did just a little here. On this side we have squares, with the grid extended in pen.

(beth) Touches of colored pencil to finish off the page.
(kirsten) Acrylic paint on top of the charcoal drawing. I like it as-is, but I think more color could be nice, too.

(beth) I stuck with the graphite and added water, a village, and a few more palm trees in the distance.
(kirsten) I saw so many of these on my spring break trip to St. John, I just had to put a palm tree into the book. There could be a scenic background or something more abstract coming - looking forward to what Beth comes up with!

(beth) I rather like the beetle and made him more colorful.
(kirsten) Ok... Maybe I should apologize for this one. Lol. We were doing insect crayon rubbings at school and in the absence of any other inspiration, I glued him in.

(beth) Well, this isn't quite what I'd intended to do to the page, and some of the ink seeped through to other pages, but at least it's something capable of being built on by something else.
(kirsten) A quick addition of some of my own marbled paper. A bit of a fun color contrast and repetition of the rectangles.
(beth) And finally for this round, a page begun with a strip of my newly marbled paper adhered to the left edge.

(kirsten) Beth added some last bits of color. All done!
(kirsten) A little acrylic paint, more color, more texture.

(beth) I so adore the creatures Kirsten put in. I used crayon on the background, looking for a different texture.
(kirsten) I used some pens to turn the dots into various rainforest animals. I like how they turned out - but it definitely needs more coloring. I thought that Beth would have fun coloring them in and adding background details.
(beth) The other side of the holes spread. Now the hole are revealing orangish dots with some other colors on the right hand side. I have some ideas of where this could go but it will be interesting to see what Kirsten does with it.

(kirsten) More dots and some captions for the yearbook. (beth) I gave them a reason to be together, but it's not quite done
(kirsten) The beaks just... arrived.
(beth) I added some tiny holes to mine - the eyes, and through the other side I colored in warm colors. I looked at the dots and decided to join them together. The people kind of remind me of muppets...

(kirsten) It seemed like that diagonal vine was dividing the page somehow, so I decided to morph it into a snake to accentuate the division. Maybe something totally different will be happening up in the upper left hand corner...

(beth) Additional greenery. I love those leaves by the way. They have this great sheen and a little texture in person.

(beth) Just a bit of background to finish off the page.
(kirsten) The colors just... exploded!

(beth) I blanked on this one for a while, then added the stamp border, then decided to echo it. It definitely needs more, with those colors just being an underlayer for something, but it's a start.
(kirsten) I used these stamps in another project and wanted to use them again here. I love idea that postage can be so colorful, and I think the rainbow theme really accentuates that quality.

(beth) I've been working with a sea serpent image for a carving for print, so I added him here in watercolor pencils. Those did work MUCH better on this surface. And some extra tiny fishies. I'm really happy with the way this spread turned out.
(kirsten) I saw a fish here - so I used watercolor pencils as well, but just brushed over with a tiny brush to avoid the soakage issues.
(beth) I've been working in watercolor crayons, so thought I'd try them here. NOT horribly effective on this paper and some water did go through the binding to other pages, though it didn't hurt anything. Won't be doing this again. Especially since Kirsten will need to be a little careful of what she puts on top.

(beth) I didn't paint the background, but used colored pencil, going with the flow of the pears.
(kirsten) What can I say, I'm a newlywed! Lots of potential for more collage or a painted background?

(beth) I expande the geometric patterns with some nifty new metallic colored pencils.
(kirsten) I traced around the circles with my gel pens (I'm addicted). I think they look kind of like amoebas.
(beth) Lots of little dots - stamped images with a cork.

(kirsten) I've been playing with altering photos in the last few days, and I happened to have a photograph of the Eiffel Tower in Las Vegas, so I thought it would fit in well here. I used a bleach pen to create the outline around the tower, and painted the pages with acrylic paints.
(beth) I've spent some time recently looking at the Eiffel Tower images so I put a couple into the journal. Kirsten doesn't have to take them in that direction, but that's where they came from.

(Beth) Filled in a few more little people and some paper and decided we're probably done with this one. It was a lot of fun, though.

(kirsten) I added some characters to hang out with Beth's people.
(beth) This was a great picture starter! I added some little people doing assorted things and coordinated the background. Maybe Kirsten will add some more.
(Kirsten) O.k., so obviously I didn't spend much time thinking out this page, but I do hope that it will be a good picture starter for Beth, and I think it has a good sense of movement.

(kirsten) I thought that this page needed some girly swirlies. I doodled it while I was having a coffee at my favorite coffee shop.
(beth) I started this page out by drawing on extra petals and partway through I was very displeased. So I painted it over in purple. While doing so the idea came into my mind of that custom of removing the petals... I'd never painted a human body part before and am thrilled that I was able to mix a decent color and paint recognizable fingers. This page might be done or might not.
(Kirsten) Torn paper flower made with some of my Basic Grey paper. They have great designs and color combos.

(beth) After I saw Kirsten's picture I knew why the writing was wierd - the aliens did it. So I added sky and a UFO speeding off. *GRIN*

(Kirsten) Great paper. I had a little artist block so I took inspiration from a funny looking chicken ornament that I bought and turned her into a collage. She is a little confused about what all that writing on the billboard means, too!
(beth) I adore this paper. It reminds me of some sort of writing.

(beth) I filled the last two boxes with a memory of my trip to an exhibit of Ted Hallman's Fiber Labyrinths. The montage looks fantastic and these pages are done.

(Kirsten) The little boxes were fun to work in. I just filled them with some random doodles and a sketch from my trip to the Grant Wood art exhibit. I left Beth a few more boxes to play with.
(beth) Grids make good inspiration fodder because you can put things in little squares and they don't all have to match.

Visual Correspondence Project

The purpose of this blog is to record the results of a mail art project in visual correspondence. Kirsten and myself each start with a book; we both chose moleskines. I draw, paint, collage, play in mine a little bit and she does the same in hers. Then we trade and respond to what the other created, either on the next page or by altering the previous art. Then the cycle continues. Four of these projects are going on among members of the Embellished Circus. Keren/nuKKe suggested the idea and set up the partners.
